There are lots of game in the genre of MMO and subgroup - MMORPG. From great Star Wars Galaxies where players are traveling thru the universe, to World of Warcraft where magical world of Azeroth is waiting for us to discovery. Each game has unique and sometimes very convicting world of game. Probably the most here convincing is Lord of the Rings Online: Shadow of Angmar, based on classical fantasy saga written by Sir J.J.R. Tolkien. Some may say that World of Warcraft is more convicting but let's face true ( visit here ) - who knows about world of Azeroth much? Only WoW players. In fact, not all of them. About Lord of the Rings Online I can say a lot. Because I feel the spirit of game, I know very well all places, characters (ok not all of them) or even items (like Bilbo's Sting).

World of Warcraft? I barely know name: Azeroth. Anyway I don't want to say that Lotro is better than WoW. All I want to say that the world of Middlearth is something more than Azeroth.

Mentioned before - Star Wars Galaxies is game ok but for me is too old. I think producers created poor game, very boring, with nothing to do. SW Galaxies was created in 2001 I know but I think this game is poor even so. It was bad even in 2001.

Anyway we have good futuristic MMO? After Star Wars and Anarchy Online, we've got Tabula Rasa (with this chick Sarah Morrison - delicious) but game isn't so good. I will try trial, but opinions about Tabula Rasa are not so good. Maybe Lucas Arts is working now on Star Wars Galaxies 2? Or something like that? If they do homework, they can create here great MMO. Market is hungry for some space mmo adventure ;-). I forgot about Eve Online - this star mmo is worth of playing. It's too complicated for bigger audience, but Eve has lots of subscribed players (around 300.000).
